Common Korean Sound Changes: Spelling, Liaison and Consonant Changes (한국어 발음 변화와 표기를 구분하는 교재)
Learn common differences between written Korean and pronunciation through worked examples of liaison, nasalization, liquidization, tensification, palatalization and aspiration.
형태를 보존하는 한국어 표기와 실제 발음을 구분하고, 연음·비음화·유음화·경음화·구개음화·격음화의 예시를 통해 입력할 철자를 확인합니다.
1. Morphophonemic Spelling vs. Spoken Pronunciation (표음주의와 형태주의 맞춤법의 이해)
Beginners often wonder why 한국어 (Korean language) is pronounced [한구거 / han-gu-geo] but typed as 한-국-어, or why 해돋이 (sunrise) is pronounced [해도지 / hae-do-ji]. Modern Korean orthography preserves the root morpheme (국, 돋) so readers instantly grasp meaning, while spoken Korean applies automatic phonological assimilation.
받아쓰기에서는 발음만 들은 뒤 곧바로 자모로 옮기기보다, 어떤 단어와 조사가 쓰였는지 확인해야 합니다. 아래 규칙은 자주 만나는 유형을 설명하지만 모든 단어나 예외를 포괄하지 않으며, 일정 비율의 오류를 해결한다고 보장하지 않습니다.
2. Common Changes and Their Conditions (자주 만나는 음운 변화와 적용 조건)
1) Liaison (연음법칙): When a syllable ending in a batchim is followed by a vowel-initial grammatical particle (marked with initial ㅇ), the batchim consonant slides over to become the onset of the next syllable (e.g., 음악을 becomes [으마글], 꽃이 becomes [꼬치]).
2) Nasalization (비음화): Plosive finals ㄱ, ㄷ and ㅂ can become ㅇ, ㄴ and ㅁ before nasal initials ㄴ or ㅁ, as in 박물관 [방물관] and 감사합니다 [감사함니다]. 3) Liquidization (유음화): common ㄴ/ㄹ combinations become [ㄹ+ㄹ], as in 신라 [실라] and 설날 [설랄]; not every written ㄴ+ㄹ sequence follows the same rule. 4) Tensification (경음화): a following plain consonant can be tense after a stop final, as in 학교 [학꾜] and 국밥 [국빱]. Check the word and rule conditions rather than changing every consonant mechanically.
3. Keyboard Strategy: Type the Root Morpheme, Not the Surface Sound (어근 중심 타이핑 전략)
For 합니다, compare the heard form [함니다] with the written sequence ㅎ(G) + ㅏ(K) + ㅂ(Q) + ㄴ(S) + ㅣ(L) + ㄷ(E) + ㅏ(K). The QWERTY sequence is gkqslek. The ㅂ is retained in the spelling even though it sounds like [ㅁ] before ㄴ.
소리 나는 대로 [으마글]이나 [감사함니다]로 치는 실수를 방지하려면, 명사 어근(음악, 꽃, 부엌)과 조사(을, 이, 에)의 경계를 의식하며 왼손 받침 키를 먼저 확정하는 습관을 들여야 합니다.
Core Reference Table (핵심 정리표)
| Rule Name (음운 규칙) | Spelled Form (실제 타이핑 표기) | Spoken Sound (실제 발음) | Phonetic Mechanism (변동 원리) | Key Typing Point (타자 주의점) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Liaison (연음) | 음악을 / 꽃이 | [으마글] / [꼬치] | Batchim moves to empty ㅇ onset | Keep original batchim ㄱ / ㅊ on first block |
| Nasalization (비음화) | 박물관 / 국물 | [방물관] / [궁물] | ㄱ + ㅁ becomes [ㅇ + ㅁ] | Type ㄱ(R) batchim, not ㅇ(D) |
| Nasalization (비음화) | 합니다 / 학년 | [함니다] / [항년] | ㅂ + ㄴ → [ㅁ + ㄴ]; ㄱ + ㄴ → [ㅇ + ㄴ] | Keep ㅂ(Q) in 합니다; ㄱ(R) in 학년 |
| Liquidization (유음화) | 설날 / 연락 | [설랄] / [열락] | ㄹ + ㄴ or ㄴ + ㄹ becomes [ㄹ + ㄹ] | Distinguish ㄴ(S) vs ㄹ(F) by root word |
| Palatalization (구개음화) | 같이 / 해돋이 | [가치] / [해도지] | ㅌ/ㄷ + 이 becomes [치/지] | Retain ㅌ(X) or ㄷ(E) on stem |
| Aspiration (격음화) | 좋다 / 입학 | [조타] / [이팍] | ㅎ adjacent to ㄱ/ㄷ/ㅂ/ㅈ can produce an aspirated consonant | Type ㅎ(G) batchim or initial explicitly |
Worked Examples & Common Questions (예제 풀이와 자주 하는 질문)
Worked example: 음악을 · 소리와 철자를 나누기
Start from the noun 음악 and the object particle 을. The ㄱ is heard at the start of the following syllable, so 음악을 sounds like [으마글]. Wrong written answer: 으마글. Correct written answer: 음악을. The pronunciation note explains what you hear; it does not replace the spelling in a typing exercise.
음악+을의 형태를 먼저 찾고 ‘음악을’을 입력합니다. [으마글]은 발음을 보여 주는 표기입니다. 대괄호 속 소리를 타자 정답으로 그대로 옮기지 마세요.
Do not reverse every sound mechanically · 발음만으로 철자를 확정하지 않기
국물 sounds like [궁물], while 학교 sounds like [학꾜]. Preserve ㄱ in 국 and the plain ㄱ in 교 when spelling those words. However, hearing a nasal or tense consonant does not prove that it came from a sound-change rule. Word meaning and the dictionary spelling are still necessary.
모든 [ㅇ]을 ㄱ으로 고치거나 모든 된소리를 예사소리로 바꾸면 오히려 틀립니다. 문장 속 단어를 알아낸 다음 해당 규칙이 적용되는 조건인지 확인하세요.
FAQ: why is 같이 [가치]? · 연음과 구개음화의 차이
같이 is spelled with final ㅌ but pronounced [가치]. This involves palatalization before 이, not merely moving an unchanged ㅌ to the next syllable. Compare 꽃이 [꼬치], where the existing final ㅊ links across. The similar surface sound does not make the two spellings interchangeable.
같이와 꽃이는 둘 다 ‘치’가 들리지만 받침은 각각 ㅌ과 ㅊ입니다. 듣기에 비슷한 결과와 원래 단어의 표기를 구분하는 것이 핵심입니다.

음악을 is pronounced [으마글], but the spelling keeps 음악 + 을. Do not type the pronunciation as 으마글.
