Mastering Korean Particles: Complete Textbook on 은/는 vs. 이/가, 을/를, 에/에서 (한국어 핵심 조사 완벽 정리 교재)

Clear up the #1 grammar confusion in Korean: topic markers (은/는) vs. subject markers (이/가), object markers (을/를), and location markers (에 vs. 에서).

외국인 한국어 학습자가 가장 어려워하는 주제 보조사(은/는)와 주격 조사(이/가)의 미묘한 뉘앙스 차이, 받침 유무에 따른 이형태 선택 규칙, 그리고 장소 조사(에 vs 에서)를 명쾌하게 정리합니다.

1. Allomorph Selection by Batchim: Vowel-Final vs. Consonant-Final (받침 유무에 따른 조사 결합 원리)

Several particle pairs depend on the noun's last sound: use 은/이/을 after a final consonant and 는/가/를 after a vowel. Learn 과/와 as its own pair: 책과 but 친구와. 과 starts with ㄱ, so 'every particle after a consonant begins with a vowel' is not a valid general rule. With (으)로, final ㄹ is an important exception: 지하철로.

은/는·이/가·을/를은 앞말의 받침 유무에 따라 형태를 고릅니다. 과/와는 ‘책과, 친구와’처럼 각각 익혀야 합니다. ‘과’는 ㄱ으로 시작하므로 받침 뒤의 모든 조사가 모음으로 시작해 연음된다고 설명하면 틀립니다. (으)로는 ㄹ 받침 뒤에 ‘로’를 쓰는 예외도 함께 확인하세요.

2. Topic Marker (은/는) vs. Subject Marker (이/가): Contrast & Known Info vs. New Focus

Use 은/는 to establish the overarching topic ('As for X...'), state general truths, or draw a contrast between two things (형은 키가 크지만 동생은 작아요). Use 이/가 to introduce brand-new information into the discourse, answer 'Who/What?' questions (누가 왔어요? 민수가 왔어요), or pair with descriptive/existential predicates (있다/없다/되다/아니다).

'은/는'은 이미 알고 있는 화제를 제시하거나 다른 대상과 대조할 때 쓰이며, 서술어 부분에 핵심 정보가 놓입니다. 반면 '이/가'는 새로운 대상을 처음 언급하거나 주어 자체를 강조하여 지정할 때 쓰입니다.

3. Static Destination (에) vs. Dynamic Action Venue (에서) (장소 조사 '에'와 '에서'의 구분)

Attach 에 to mark static existence (집에 있어요), time (세 시에 만나요), or movement destination with 가다/오다 (학교에 가요). Attach 에서 to mark the active arena where a dynamic action takes place (도서관에서 공부해요, 카페에서 커피를 마셔요).

'에'는 존재·도착점·시간의 고정된 기준점을 나타내고, '에서'는 구체적인 행동이나 사건이 이루어지는 활동 공간 및 출발점을 나타냅니다.

Worked Examples & Common Questions (예제 풀이와 자주 하는 질문)

Same noun, different focus · 민수는 / 민수가

Compare 민수는 학생이에요 (as for Minsu, he is a student) with 누가 왔어요? 민수가 왔어요 (who arrived? Minsu did). The noun ends in a vowel in both cases, but topic versus subject focus changes the particle family first; final-consonant rules select the form only after that choice.

‘받침이 없으니 무조건 가’가 아닙니다. 먼저 화제·대조를 나타낼지, ‘누가?’의 답을 나타낼지 정한 뒤 는이나 가를 고르세요. 짧은 문맥 없이 두 조사를 항상 하나의 정답으로 채점할 수는 없습니다.

Wrong and corrected: 책와 → 책과 · 조사별 형태 익히기

책과 공책을 사요 means I buy a book and a notebook. 친구와 같이 가요 means I go with a friend. Wrong forms for these meanings are 책와 and 친구과. By contrast, 에 and 에서 do not switch their initial letters because a noun has a final consonant: 집에, 학교에, 집에서, 학교에서.

받침에 따라 달라지는 조사와 그렇지 않은 조사를 나누세요. 표의 (으)로도 ‘집으로’와 ‘학교로’를 비교한 다음, ㄹ 받침인 ‘길로·지하철로’를 따로 확인하면 좋습니다.

FAQ: why 학교에 but 학교에서? · 장소가 같아도 조사가 달라져요

학교에 가요 names a destination; 학교에서 공부해요 names where studying happens. Changing 에 to 에서 without changing the intended meaning is not a simple spelling correction. Translate the whole sentence and identify the verb, not just the place noun.

학교라는 단어만 보고 조사를 고르지 말고 ‘가다’인지 ‘공부하다’인지 살펴보세요. ‘에=정지, 에서=움직임’만 외우면 ‘학교에 가요’처럼 이동하는 문장도 설명하기 어렵습니다.
