Mastering Dual Korean Number Systems: Sino-Korean, Native Numbers & Counters (한국어 이원 숫자 체계 및 단위 명사 교재)
Learn exactly when to use Sino-Korean (일·이·삼) vs. Native Korean (하나·둘·셋) numbers, how telling time combines both, and how counters work.
한국어의 두 가지 숫자 체계인 한자어 수(일·이·삼)와 고유어 수(하나·둘·셋)의 쓰임새를 구분하고, 시각 읽기(시·분)와 필수 단위 명사(개·명·잔·권·살) 결합법을 완성합니다.
1. Two Number Systems and Their Common Uses (두 숫자 체계의 주된 쓰임)
Korean uses Sino-Korean numbers (일, 이, 삼, 사, 오...) for dates, money, phone numbers, floor numbers, minutes, and numbers above 100. It uses Native Korean numbers (하나, 둘, 셋, 넷, 다섯...) for counting physical objects, people, age (살), and hours of the clock.
날짜·화폐·전화번호·버스 노선·분(Minute)·초(Second)처럼 수학적이거나 제도적인 단위는 한자어 숫자를 쓰고, 사물의 개수(개)·사람 수(명)·나이(살)·시간(시)처럼 일상에서 손으로 세는 단위는 고유어 숫자를 씁니다.
2. The Five Contracted Native Numbers Before Counters (단위 명사 앞 고유어 수사 형태 변화: 한·두·세·네·스무)
When Native Korean numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, and 20 stand directly before a unit counter (개, 명, 잔, 마리, 시), they drop their final consonant/syllable: 하나 becomes 한, 둘 becomes 두, 셋 becomes 세, 넷 becomes 네, and 스물 becomes 스무 (e.g., 커피 두 잔, 사과 네 개, 스무 살).
한·두·세·네·스무는 자주 쓰는 단위 명사 앞에서 확인할 형태입니다. 다만 모든 수와 모든 단위가 하나의 규칙만으로 정해지지는 않습니다. 개수를 세는지, 번호를 읽는지, 날짜나 시각인지부터 구분하세요.
3. Telling Time & Reading Large Currency Figures (시각 읽기 및 큰 단위 금액 표기법)
Telling time combines both systems in a single phrase: Hours use Native Korean (한 시, 두 시, 세 시...) while Minutes use Sino-Korean (십오 분, 삼십 분, 사십오 분). Large numbers group by 10,000 (만) rather than 1,000 (천): 50,000 won is 오만 원.
한국어의 큰 숫자는 천(1,000) 단위가 아니라 만(10,000)과 억(100,000,000) 단위로 끊어 읽으므로, 금액을 타이핑할 때도 만 단위를 기준으로 자리수를 파악하면 빠르고 정확합니다.

| 3 | 삼 (sam) | 셋 (set) | 세 (se) | 삼십 분 (30 mins) / 오후 세 시 (3 o'clock PM) |

Worked Examples & Common Questions (예제 풀이와 자주 하는 질문)
Clock reading: 2:10 → 두 시 십 분 · 단위를 먼저 찾기
For ordinary clock reading, 2:10 is 두 시 십 분, not 두 시 열 분. 시 usually takes a native number and 분 takes a Sino-Korean number. 오후 두 시 and 이십사 시간식 14:00 describe the same time using different conventions; do not assume one reading rule covers every timetable or technical context.
시간의 숫자만 보지 말고 바로 뒤에 오는 시·분을 확인하세요. 일상적인 시각 표현을 연습할 때는 ‘두 시 십 분’처럼 읽습니다. 여기서 숫자 체계의 구분과 실제 나이 계산 방식은 별개의 문제입니다.
Number label versus number of times · 사 번 / 네 번
사 번 출구 is Exit 4, a label; 네 번 갔어요 means I went four times, a count. Similarly, 삼 호선 names Line 3 while 세 명 counts three people. Wrong shortcut: using native numbers for every occurrence of 번. Decide whether it is an identifier or a repeated action.
출구 번호를 말하려면 ‘사 번 출구에서 만나요’가 적절합니다. ‘네 번’은 보통 횟수를 셀 때 쓰므로, 앞서 배운 고유어 수사 규칙을 모든 번호에 적용하지 마세요.
Counter practice and a price check · 개수와 금액 읽기
Compare 커피 두 잔 (two cups of coffee), 책 세 권 (three books) and 스무 살 (twenty years old). Keep the noun-counter relationship visible. For a fictional purchase, three books at 8,000 won each total 24,000 won: 이만 사천 원. The number of books and the price use different systems.
틀린 형태 ‘둘 잔·셋 권·스물 살’을 각각 ‘두 잔·세 권·스무 살’과 비교하세요. 금액 예시는 계산을 확인하는 연습이며 실제 상품 가격이나 통계가 아닙니다.

Choose the number system that fits the unit
Use native numbers for these counted items and ordinary clock hours, but Sino-Korean for minutes and exit labels.
