Business Korean & Workplace Etiquette: Honorifics, Titles & Professional Email Templates (비즈니스 한국어 실전 교재)
Master formal Korean workplace communication, honorific verb endings (-하십니까/-드리겠습니다), job titles, and ready-to-type business email structures.
직장 메시지에서 자주 쓰는 격식체와 공손한 요청, 상대방을 높이는 표현을 비교하고, 목적·기한·첨부 여부가 드러나는 짧은 업무 이메일을 작성합니다.
1. Formal Deferential Style (합쇼체) vs. Polite Informal Style (해요체) in the Workplace
In Korean business settings, official emails, presentations, and first meetings use the formal deferential ending -ㅂ니다/-습니다 (합쇼체), while daily team slack messages and coffee chats blend in polite -아/어요 (해요체). Understanding when to elevate verbs (드리다 to give humbly, 말씀드리다 to speak humbly, 여쭙다 to ask humbly, 뵙다 to meet humbly) signals instant professionalism.
격식체와 높임말은 같은 개념이 아닙니다. ‘제가 확인하겠습니다’는 자신의 행동을 격식 있게 말하고, ‘부장님이 확인하십니다’는 주어를 높입니다. 자신의 행동에 무조건 -시-를 넣지 말고, ‘자료를 드리다’처럼 누구를 높이는 표현인지 확인하세요.
2. Standard Korean Business Email Structure (실무 비즈니스 이메일 4단 구성법)
A useful email can make four elements easy to find: the subject, the sender, the requested action with relevant details, and a closing. A bracketed tag or seasonal greeting is optional. Workplace conventions, the relationship and the message's urgency determine the most suitable format.
이메일 제목에는 '[제안 요청] 프로젝트 일정 협의의 건'처럼 말머리를 달아 용건을 명확히 밝히고, 본문 첫머리에는 '안녕하십니까, 기획팀 홍길동입니다.'에 이어 상대방의 안부를 묻는 인사를 배치한 뒤 핵심 용건을 간결하게 전달합니다.
3. Essential Meeting & Schedule Coordination Phrases (회의 진행 및 일정 조율 실무 표현)
When proposing changes or declining politely in Korean business culture, indirect cushion phrases such as 혹시 괜찮으시다면 (If by any chance it is convenient for you) or 내부 검토 후 회신드리겠습니다 (We will reply after internal review) maintain harmony and mutual respect.
일정 변경이나 거절에는 공손함과 명확함이 함께 필요합니다. ‘그날은 참석이 어렵습니다. 다음 날 오전은 가능합니다’처럼 가능한 대안을 덧붙일 수 있습니다. 모든 회사에서 간접적인 표현만 옳다고 단정하지 않습니다.

Worked Examples & Common Questions (예제 풀이와 자주 하는 질문)
A complete short email · 용건과 기한이 보이는 이메일
Subject: [검토 요청] 발표 자료 초안. Opening: 안녕하세요. 기획팀 김민수입니다. Main message: 발표 자료 초안을 첨부합니다. 금요일 오후 세 시까지 의견을 보내 주실 수 있을까요? Closing: 확인해 주셔서 감사합니다. 김민수 드림. This is an original model, not a mandatory company standard; replace the team, deadline and attachment with real details.
제목·작성자·첨부 자료·요청·기한이 한 번씩 드러나는지 확인하세요. 이 예문의 금요일 오후 세 시는 연습용 기한입니다. 실제 메시지에서는 상대와 협의한 기한을 적고 파일을 정말 첨부했는지도 확인해야 합니다.
Wrong and corrected: 제가 확인하시겠습니다 · 누구를 높이나요?
For your own action, use 제가 확인하겠습니다, not 제가 확인하시겠습니다. For an honoured subject, 부장님이 확인하십니다 can be appropriate. For giving something to a respected recipient, 자료를 드리겠습니다 uses 드리다. Politeness is not achieved by inserting -시- into every verb.
상대를 높이는 표현, 문장의 주어를 높이는 표현, 문장 끝을 격식 있게 만드는 표현을 나누어 보세요. 내가 자료를 드리는 것과 상사가 자료를 확인하시는 것은 높임의 대상이 다릅니다.
FAQ: must a message be long to be polite? · 길어야 공손한가요?
No. 답변 감사합니다. 내일 연락드리겠습니다. can acknowledge a reply and state the next action clearly. If a request needs a file name or deadline, add it; if not, extra formulaic greetings can hide the purpose. Check the recipient's title and spelling rather than relying on a universal email template.
짧은 답장도 상황에 맞으면 충분합니다. 기한과 요청 내용이 없는 긴 인사말보다, 필요한 정보를 빠뜨리지 않은 공손한 문장이 실제 업무에는 유용합니다.
